Julie & Ethan | Matron of Style x Haute Khuuture

February 25, 2017 By @matronofstyle

When a Vietnamese Groom marries a chic, fashionista Chinese Bride…

Chinese and Vietnamese wedding traditions share similarities and this tea ceremony is a beautiful fusion of the two.  Meet Julie and Ethan…met as teens, dated in their 20s and here now celebrating their first wedding anniversary.  #IDoBUIKHUU was a 2-day wedding extravaganza and Day 1 is re-posted by Matron of Style with permission by the bride herself Julie Khuu of Haute Khuuture.

We finally made it guys!

It’s our 1 year anniversary to the day and I can’t believe how fast this past year has just flown by.  Now that we’ve completely settled into our new lives as husband and wife, I’m recounting all the treasured moments from our wedding weekend with a trip down memory lane. It’s taken me a full year to finally share our wedding album, collated from professional photographers, snapshots from friends and family, and special candids taken right from my phone.  It was tough to whittle these precious memories down to this modest collection, but I hope that you’re able to get a sense of what it was like behind the best days of our lives…

Without further delay, here’s Part I of our spectacular 2-day wedding extravaganza starting with the traditional Chinese Tea Ceremony.

Having been raised in Southern California all our lives, le hubs and I wanted to honor the traditions of our upbringing, first with a formal tea ceremony for our family and closest friends in Orange County where we reside, followed by a reception in Los Angeles, where we both currently work.  Our wedding consisted of 3 main events: The Friday tea ceremony, Saturday wedding ceremony followed by the Saturday evening reception immediately to follow.

The weekend long festivities began on Friday morning with a Chinese tea ceremony to honor my heritage.  When the groom arrives to pick up his bride, he is first subjected to a slew of silly games to complete then offers red lixi envelopes filled with money in exchange for a sneak peek of his blushing bride in her traditional Ki Miao wedding ensemble and headdress.

After the groom presents his dowry to the bride’s family, he is now allowed to secure his bride and together they pray to their ancestors and burn incense for a happy and blessed future together. With the first event under our belts we were relaxed and ready to celebrate the reception the following day.

An absolute beautiful day right?  Julie’s wardrobe changes were stunning and each with its own ornate headdress, too!  And the bride tribe! Did you notice how coordinated they were? Matching fur stoles & dresses of every color of the rainbow like Skittles!  There’s a story behind that for sure! Ethan also looked dapper in his tuxedo!  G’d up from the feet up is what I like to call it.

If this was just the tea ceremony, can you imagine the wedding ceremony and reception?  Imagine no more…See Julie & Ethan’s Day 2 here. Or see all of #idobuikhuu wedding here.

So how exactly do we know each other? Julie and I met over twenty years ago in junior high and have been friends ever since!  Though we went to different high schools, different colleges and carved different career paths (she an Interior Designer, I a Wardrobe Stylist / Costumer), we always managed to find each other! Growing up, we’d spot each other on the streets, at gatherings, at night clubs, and a love fest always ensued oozing of giggly excitement screaming, hugging “oh my gawd! It’s been forever!”  Yes, we were those high pitched squealing girls!

I’ve had major girl crush on Julie for years.  I mean, how can you not? She’s a girl’s girl with mad style! It’s all her fault that I have this terrible habit of wearing things once and avoid wearing it again, especially if I’ve been photographed in it! haha It feeds the shopping habit for sure! LOL! One night, over dinner in Downtown Santa Ana, Julie was telling me how much she loved blogging!  And I responded I couldn’t do it; I couldn’t put myself out there, but daym was she fearless about it.  She owned it with full conviction and I admire her so much for it! Now, years later, here I am with Matron of Style!  But let’s be 100, I still hold back; hardly posting a pic of myself or revealing too much.  Yeah, working on that….Mang, just meet me for happy hour, let the drinks flow and watch the sailor mouth come out full fledge!

To Julie, my local celebrity, you are a beautiful soul, stylish, successful, admired, loved, and cherished!  I am immensely happy for both you and ông xã on your union and celebrating your first year of marriage!  Cheers to 100 years of happiness, trăm năm hạnh phúc!
