Vi ‘s Áo Đón Dâu | Matron of Style x Lin & Jirsa

April 13, 2016 By @matronofstyle

When I first connected with Vi by way of photographers Lin & Jirsa, she was so sweet and easy going! She describes her personal style as relaxed and simple with girly touches.  She’s a huge fan of anything that gets her out the door fast!

We started digging into the inspiration behind her áo đón dâu and she immediately gave credit to her now mother-in-law!  Going back to Monday’s introductory post of Vi & Larry, Vi wanted everything to be timeless.  And to her that meant lace, hints of nude and silvery metallics.  When mother-in-law advised that a sheer, nude illusion provides a slimming effect, the direction became a clear winner.  So Vi described both to a private áo dài designer and tailoress in local Orange County, CA and she went to work.

Talk about Old School, That’s So Cool

When Vi shared her vision, the designer did not sketch one thing…Nada! Instead, she went old school, whipped out a few rolls of fabric and started draping it on Vi.  Simultaneously, she spoke freely of how the fabric would hang and pulled out another roll to show how she would hand appliqué a design to accentuate Vi’s curves and provide aesthetics to the áo dài.  She quickly moved on to the turban (or khăn đống) solidifying that it would be made to match.  Almost near speechless and still attempting to visually process, Vi took in every word and relinquished trust to the designer.  The fact that Mother-in-Law was also a client made it much easier.

Within a few days…yes, days, NOT weeks, Vi had a custom, made-to-measure, silver lace áo dài with hand-appliquéd, stylized cherry blossoms (or hoa anh đào) with matching khăn đống.
